Everyone occasionally needs some alone time, and Saturday proved perfect for me. Both D and the Chief had to work, so I took the opportunity to hit the trout stream free from any frustrating influences.
Again, I am still exploring the creek, so my primary interest was in locating fish more than taking an impressive haul. I started mid-stream, working my way down for about two miles, and I believe I have now identified the extent of the trout territory.
I did catch six trout, using the chartreuse, bead-headed SHWAPFs I had whipped up and a Parachute Adams. There were two moments that proved to be highlights. The first was locating a spot that reminded of a classic fly fishing location. The area is spread out and offers at least three spots with extremely diverse fishing conditions that may prove to make this my favorite honey hole. The second was catching a ten-inch trout there.
Having caught a larger rainbow that did fight, I can honestly say that I prefer catching smallmouth and largemouth at the same size. That said, I prefer the environmental conditions that are favorable to catching trout. So I'm torn.
At any rate, I had a great day. I now know the creek and I plan to start concentrating now on presentation technique and fly selection. As I learn, I will be sure to let you know what I discover.
