A Brief Escape

D and I had nothing to do tonight and several of hours of daylight left, so I suggested we hit the trout stream. She packed some snacks, we loaded the truck, and headed south, Thursday.

I'm still exploring the stream, so I my focus was more on finding fish than catching a bunch. Once we got there, D thought she would just watch, which disappointed me a bit, but it is her choice. I tied on a chartreuse, bead-headed SHWAPF and started casting anywhere that looked possible to catch a trout.

The first few spots came up dry, but the third produced almost immediately. It was at a point just below a riffle where a fallen log was providing some cover parallel to the flow over a decently deep, murky channel. After I caught the first trout, though, the next thing I caught was a tree, which became a theme for the night. After tying on a new tippet and SHWAPF, I caught another 5-inch trout. It was time to move.

The light was getting low and so we moved a couple hundred yards downstream before beating a retreat to the car. Along the way, I managed to pull in a six-incher. It was a fitting close to a nice escape.
